Karl-Anthony Towns and Knicks enter camp without extension agreement

Reports offer different views of the talks

Karl-Anthony Towns and the New York Knicks have yet to reach a contract extension agreement ahead of training camp, with reports presenting different assessments of the negotiations.

ESPN reported Wednesday that talks had stalled and an agreement was unlikely before camp.

SNY’s Ian Begley, however, reported that the sides had maintained substantial dialogue and that their conversations had been positive. He said New York had made clear it wanted Towns to remain with the franchise long term.

According to SNY, the Knicks have discussed proposals worth between $45 million and $55 million annually. Those figures describe negotiations, rather than the terms of a completed deal.

Towns helped New York win its first championship in 53 years last season. His extension is one of several decisions facing the organization, with Josh Hart and Miles McBride also eligible, SNY reported.

The differing accounts leave the timing of any agreement uncertain as preparations for the title defense begin.
